The Market, El Mercado
El Mercado Municipal….. a truly eye opener !! How intense you want to get to experience the Mexican flavor will depend on you. The Mercado is a great place; We MAY or MAY NOT get off the Van to walk around for only a few minutes or even a couple of hours, always of course in company of your private tour guide and driver; it will be all up to you! We do tailored-made tours. We only take you where you want to go.
I go there in the mornings to get my fresh fruit for breakfast or fish and shrimp for dinner that evening. Try it, you’ll like it.
During the day you see locals shop for piñatas, flowers, leather goods, fresh meet and fish, basket, hammocks, amulets to attract lovers or ward off enemies; velvet paintings of Virgin of Guadalupe. You will also see them walk away with baskets filled with fresh vegetables, meats and fish, fresh cut flowers. You name it and they have it at the Mercado Municipal.
This market is very different from the flea market — the sales persons are not pushy, and the goods are fruit, spices, home baked goods, some crafts, and pottery.
This is the main market of Acapulco Port, the largest and the best stocked. Mercado Central has an area for poultry, fish, meat, produce and sea food. Inside are some vegetables and fruit warehouses where the prices are very low if you know how to negotiate or haggle. Everything there is a bargain, and the only inconvenience there is the facilities there are not all the nice they should be.

The market can be a little graphic but always very interesting to those that wish “diving” into the local culture.
Unlike the tourist markets all around Acapulco, Mercado Municipal is the market the local people use to sell more to the Mexicans than to the tourist. Yes, Mercado Municipal is a treasure of cultural experience. You know the old expression “stop to smell the flowers!”. So, enjoy the flower market, enjoy the animals, the fish market, and of course the many crafts made right before you eyes! Did you know that you can watch them as they make the Piñatas right there? So have fun!
Very unusual but always interesting, that is the Acapulco´s Mercado
Also you will find many different areas, from fresh meats, chickens, cows, pork, etc., and the catch of the day fish of every size from red snapper to sword-marlin-fish. Then you will find large area that sells all kind of spices and herbs imaginable with some vendors having many booths and some other selling a single box of herbs. You will find an older woman with just a card box on her laps selling anything from herbs to flowers, spices to live beetles and so on!
After visiting it, I think we saw the real people of Acapulco. It’s not a market for silver and other tourist type items, but great to buy fresh foods other lovely items.
Come to El Mercado and see the real life of the Locals and what they buy…. their lifestyle…
The Mercado Municipal Is really an eye-opener! You can rest assured that you had never been in a real, large, Mexican market like this before, it is fascinating.
There is so much to see—dry goods, house wares, gorgeous flowers, candy, live roosters, fresh produce.
Many stalls featured health care products, which were a combination of herbal remedies and Santeria-type spells and prayers to saints.
One of these stalls had a cage full of large live bugs, whose purpose you would prefer not to ask about!

Of all the places visited on your trip to Acapulco, you will be most glad to have seen the Mercado. It is totally unlike anything you would have ever seen before! Trip Advisor
